Timeline

Timeline

The Timeline shows work items in your Flexible Table on a time-based chart. The view is split into two panes: a table on the left and a timeline on the right. Both panes are synchronized, so you can manage work items and schedules in one place. You can configure Timeline on/off, the time scale, and the layout ratio per view. Some preferences are saved in your browser.

Turn Timeline on or off

You can turn the Timeline on or off per view. Even in the same table, each view can have different Timeline settings.

  1. Log in to your Jira Cloud site.

  2. From the left sidebar, go to Apps > Flexible Table.

  3. On the All Flexible Tables page, click a table name to open it.

  1. In the table view, click Timeline to turn it on or off. By default, it is off, and only the table is shown.

  • Timeline off (default): Only the table is displayed.

  • Timeline on: The view switches to a split layout with the table on the left and the timeline on the right.

How to use the timeline view

You can manage and adjust your work items in the timeline as follows:

  • Create a schedule: Hover over an empty area in the timeline to display a ghost bar, then click or drag to set the start and end dates.

  • Adjust a schedule: Drag the schedule bar to move both the start and end dates, or drag the resize handles at either end to adjust the duration.

  • Link work items: Use the dependency handles at either end of a schedule bar to link work items that depend on others being completed first.

  • Identify scheduling issues: Work items with scheduling issues show a warning indicator on the bar, so you can quickly identify them.

  • Change the timescale: Click Change timescale in the bottom toolbar to switch between weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly views.

  • Go to today: Click Today in the bottom toolbar to display the vertical today line in the timeline.

  • Apply filters: Use Filters at the top of the table to control which work items appear in the timeline.

  • Search: Enter keywords or a work item key in Search to display matching work items in both the table and timeline.

  • Use columns: Add key fields such as assignee or status as columns in the table to view and edit information inline without opening each work item.

Screen layout

When the timeline is turned on, the view is split into two panes: the table on the left and the timeline on the right.

Left pane — Table

  • The existing table structure and column configuration are preserved.

  • Selecting a row highlights the corresponding bar in the timeline.

    • Add a work item: Changes appear immediately in both the table and timeline.

    • Select a row: Highlights the corresponding bar in the timeline.

    • Scroll: The table and timeline scroll together.

  • Timeline On/Off and the timescale are saved to the view.

  • The pane ratio between the table and the Timeline is saved to your browser. It is not applied to other users or other browsers.

Date headers

A two-level header (top and bottom) is displayed at the top of the Timeline. The header format changes based on the selected timescale. The two-level header stays fixed when you scroll vertically. You can change the timescale from the toolbar at the bottom of the Timeline.

Today indicator

The Timeline marks today's date in two places:

  • A vertical line (Today line) in the Timeline body

  • A date badge in the header area

  • The Today indicator shifts as you scroll horizontally. Click the Today button in the toolbar to return it to the default position.
